Prozac (Fluoxetine)
Prozac, is an anti-depressant commonly known as fluoxetine. It is also prescribed for obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Fluoxetine, a generic term for Prozac, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing the activity of a chemical called serotonin in the brain. In rare cases, Prozac caused its users to become violent and harm themselves or others. A number of lawsuits against Eli Lilly and other manufacturers of Prozac-like antidepressants have been filed. Some users of Prozac could also develop akathisia, a serious side effect described as inner restlessness that could lead to violent and suicidal behavior among a small percentage of users.
